Principal's Message - Aug 2011
Dear Buccaneer Family,
As we quickly approach the first day of the 2011-2012 school year, I find myself
anxious and excited to see the students on Monday, August 22nd! Although we have
been quite busy this summer, Mainland High School just doesn’t have the same energy these
weeks as when the courtyard and hallways are humming with the activity of our Buccaneers!
I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some of the things that are going to
be new at school this year. First, I am happy to announce that Christie Campanella and Shawn
Troutman will be joining the administrative staff at Mainland High School. Christie will be the
assistant principal for curriculum and instruction while Shawn will be the assistant principal in
charge of safety and security and special programs.
Second, there is a new dress code in town! This new code for student dress is a district wide
venture that addresses baggy pants and showing too much skin. You can read the specifics of the
new code in this newsletter and on our website. Once school begins, the new dress code will be
taught in class level assemblies during the first week of school.
Third, for your convenience, Mainland has a new online store! Currently, the items students
need to purchase are available on line through this link. In the near future the online school store will sell Mainland High School attire and gear.
I would also like to take this opportunity to highlight several other policies that Mainland
High School has in place for the school year:
- The tardy policy that was put in place last year will continue to be enforced this year and is
also included in this publication as well as on our website. - The lunch policy at Mainland High School allows juniors and seniors only to leave campus
for lunch with parental permission and no outstanding financial or textbook obligation to
the school. Any student leaving for lunch must have the proper ID stamped and in their
possession before leaving campus. Both the school and the parent have the right to revoke a
student’s lunch privilege at any time. If applicable, you can apply now for free and reduced
meals by going to www.myvolusiaschools.org, click school way café/meal application. This
procedure is faster and more accurate than the paper application. - All students will be required to wear their ID so that it is visible. This rule is in place for the
safety and organization of our campus.
Finally, and I believe the most important thing for everyone to remember, is that the focus
of Mainland High School – for everyone -is learning! When learning becomes the focus for
everyone, attendance, homework, engagement, connection to the school and proficiency become
paramount. If academic success for all students is to become a reality, it is essential that the
administrators, faculty and staff of Mainland High School work collaboratively with the families
of our students to ensure that good choices, proactive actions, purposeful effort, and meaningful
work become the standard for every day. In order to achieve this partnership – which is so integral
to the success we seek, the school wants to be easily and comfortably accessible to our families.
You are always welcome at Mainland High School – whether visiting in person or calling on the
phone. Let’s make this our best year ever!
